The movie is a remake of the 2013 horror film, Oculus, directed by Mike Flanagan, based on a novel of the same name by Richard Chizmar. Although Prawaal Raman is the director of Dobaara: See Your Evil 2, the story-telling is credited to the original film's writer-director Mike Flanagan. If you wish to see the original, you'll have to read the story in the novel. Oculus inspired Dobaara's writer-director Mike Flanagan to remake it in Hindi for the Indian market. So, the Indian film Dobaara is a standalone film, whereas the 2013 Hollywood film was a sequel to Oculus which was itself a standalone film. The release date of the Indian film Dobaara is August 2 while the US and UK can watch it on Aug 7.Unlike the 2013 movie, which is a scary exploration of the dark side of humanity, Dobaara is somewhat light on terror. In fact, it gets scared of itself by the end. Unlike the original Oculus, the makers of Dobaara have taken some liberties with the storyline, changing certain scenes and even the protagonist. However, the moral message from the original doesn't really feel as relevant in the current context. While it aims to preach the concept of isolation, the current version of Dobaara, in a significant departure from the original, is centered around multiple characters and their journey to an isolated cabin. If you haven't seen Oculus, the previous incarnation of Dobaara, you should check it out. It's free on Netflix and is a great watch. The newer version doesn't quite measure up to the original, even though it comes with the added bonus of an English dubbing.
