Vic The Viking And The Magic Sword

Parents need to know that Vic the Viking and the Magic Sword is an animated movie with some cartoon violence but none of which leads to any serious harm. It is based on the TV show of the same name and the Vicke Viking novels. Young Viking Vic (voiced by Declan Miele-Howell) has a strained relationship with his father, Havar (David Schaal) who considers Vic too small and weak to be a proper Viking. Despite this, Vic shows great resilience with his quick thinking frequently saving the day, leading to Havar eventually respecting him. This might give the message that a person's worth is down to their achievements. The movie does however celebrate brains over brute force and Vic is confident and assertive. The movie has mild threat and cartoon violence that fits the Viking theme, but remains suitable for young kids. Characters fight with axes, swords, arrows, and spiked maces but no one is seriously injured. There are only three female characters, all of which play to stereotypes -- a nagging wife, a nagging mother-in-law, and a young girl who fawns over a mysterious stranger. The movie is set within Norse mythology and features gods Loki and Thor. An unspecified liquid is drunk in a Viking pirate bar and a character falls down as if drunk. In the same bar, a male character performs a short, mild strip tease dance dressed as a woman and tricks his enemy into finding him attractive. His enemy dances with him and tries to kiss his cheek.

While potentially heartwarming, scratching below the surface it suggests that if Vic wasn't a heroic genius, he'd still be unworthy or at least unnoticed. Paired with the fact that the three female characters are in the background and resemble negative stereotypes, a lack of consideration for its messaging and representation starts to come through. That said, there's nothing overtly negative, it's just not as thoughtful as it first appears. But for a fun adventure with a touch of magical mythology, Vic the Viking and the Magic Sword is a fun trip on the Nordic Seas.
